AUSTRALIA 2003/2004

I had 6 ½ weeks to explore Australia – second time for both of us. Steve arrived one month earlier than me and did the east coast again. We met in Melbourne and flew straight to Hobart in Tasmania. We hired a campervan (the smallest you can get) and we quite liked it. I have to say that I arrived in OZ with a horrible cold and was happy that we didn't set up a tent in Tasmania – the nights were quite chilly. We explored nearly everything in Tasmania (in 9 days) and we liked it a lot. We flew back to Melbourne and picked up the car for the rest of the time. We also had to go shopping for camping equipment like cooker, sleeping mattresses, cutlery, cooler-box, … and then we were on our way. We did the Great Ocean Road, drove straight up to Flinders Range NP, did a dirt track along the Old Ghan Railway before arriving in Coober Pedy. From there we headed to Ayers Rock + Olgas and backwards and to Alice Springs and Darwin. Our priority was Western Australia, which is really "empty" and we sometimes struggled to get fuel + food. It was beautiful, but also mentally exhausting because nothing happens, you just see red sand. We couldn't do Bungles Bungles NP, because they are just open on a certain time of the year. To be honest it was not the best month to go (December), but for me the best time to take off time from work without problems. It was very hot – sometimes over 40°C and didn't cool down at night. We also wanted to explore the Kimberlys, but they were overfloaded and one (of two) road was already closed. From Broome we drove down to Monkey Mia and Ningaloo Reef, which is very, very beautiful + stunning before going to Perth (Pinnacles + Wave Rock). After all this nature it was good to be back to a city! From there we went down to the area around Margaret River and the beautiful coastline, before entering Nullarbor (which is the longest straightest road in the world). We gave Kalgoorlie a miss, the biggest hole in the world, but it was far too hot. We visited Adelaide and the Barossa Valley and explored Kangaroo Island before heading back to Melbourne and flying home. We did around 20.000 km in this time and it was an exhausting but also very good holiday.

6 ½ Wochen um Australien zu sehen – das zweite Mal für uns beide. Steve ist schon einen Monat vor mir angekommen und hat nochmals die Ostküste besucht. Wir haben uns in Melbourne getroffen und flogen gleich nach Hobart auf Tasmanien. Dort haben wir uns einen Campervan gemietet (den kleinsten seiner Art) und das war wirklich sehr angenehm, den ich hatte eine arge Verkühlung und außerdem war es sehr kalt in der Nacht. Wir haben sicherlich nichts ausgelassen in den 9 Tagen auf Tasmanien und wir fanden es super dort. Retour in Melbourne mussten wir erst die Campingausrüstung wie Kocher, Matratzen, Geschirr besorgen, bevor es mit unserem Mietauto Richtung Great Ocean Road ging. Von dort ging's durch den Flinders Range NP, auf eine Schotterstrasse den Old Ghan entlang, bevor wir in Coober Pedy landeten. Weiter zum Ayers Rock + Olgas und wieder retour und nach Alice Springs und Darwin. Unsere Priorität war ja Westaustralien und das war einfach unvorstellbar. So leer und groß – es war einfach mental anstrengend "nichts" zu sehen. Wir konnten leider nicht in den Bungles Bungles NP, weil dieser nur in bestimmten Monaten offen ist. Es war sicherlich nicht die beste Zeit für Australien (Dezember), aber für mich am einfachsten so lange von der Arbeit weg zu sein. Wir hatten manchmal über 40° und es wurde nicht wirklich kühler in den Nächten. Wir wollten auch in die Kimberleys, aber da war bereits eine der beiden Strassen überflutet und deshalb geschlossen. Von Broome ging's dann weiter nach Monkey Mia und dem Ningaloo Reef (welches absolut toll ist) bevor wir endlich wieder in einer Stadt waren – in Perth. Dort wurden dann die Pinnacles + Wave Rock besichtigt und dann ging's weiter Richtung Süden – Margaret River und deren Küste. Wir wollten eigentlich auch nach Kalgoorlie, dem größten Loch der Welt, aber es war einfach zu heiß. Dann kam die längste, geradeste Strasse der Welt – das Nullarbor, bevor wir in Adelaide und dem Barossa Valley ankamen. Von dort noch nach Kangaroo Island und retour nach Melbourne, wo wir dann heimflogen. Endeffektlich fuhren wir ca. 20.000 km in dieser Zeit und es war sehr anstrengend, aber ein toller Urlaub.
